2010 Breeding Pairs
I have received several inquiries into how I will be pairing up my breeders in 2010. In 2010 I will have 14 breeding pairs -- actually 17 as I have a local friend, Wayne Whiteley, who wanted to work with me on a few pairs. Fourteen pairs is the most I have ever had in my loft and is not something I hope to replicate next year, but I just bought a few too many pigeons in the off season and couldn't get down to my normal 10-12 pairs. Also, my plan is to have the three "Whiteley Pairs" -- mated up as I asked him to mate them -- be used to allow Wayne and I to enter a few one loft races together and split a few youngsters from these pairs for our racing teams. This should work well as -- as you can see -- he is getting some super pigeons that have proven themselves worthy of being bred from!!
Here you go - there is a link to the pedigrees that will be the youngsters off these pigeons:
Here are a couple quick highlight points regarding my breeding pairs. I am being very frank about some "at risk" pigeons in that they may be removed from my breeding program if they don't prove themselves this year. I think many of us keep too many pigeons that are "mediocre" and that actually slows us down in breeding super pigeons -- I try very hard not to fall into that trap.
Pair #1 - With R Dream Moorsel now done breeding, Super Kleine Lichte is the #1 stock cock in my loft. He has bred so many super pigeons for me...look at my Top Racers Page and my One Loft Results pages and you will see his progeny all over it. "The Aarden Hen" is without a doubt the best breeding hen I have ever had -- with really nobody even that close to being in second. This pair will now be together until they die... Every hen from this pair will go to the big one loft races I enter -- I will try to keep the cocks for me to race.
Pair #2 - Fortunately, The Inbred Moorsel is proving to be just as potent of breeder as his father -- maybe even a little more consistent with different hens. Just a super breeder. I am mating him to my favorite handling hen in the loft who is now proving her worth as a breeder -- Miss Beautiful. Watch for their young in the big one loft races in 2010!
Pair #3 - One of the best racers I have ever had is UCA 1914 and he will be mated to Super Kleine Lichte's best breeding hen to date - Ducky. In the two years I had them together they bred me money winners in the World Ace Challenge and Highlander race -- FOUR of them! I had two money winners in EACH of those races and several super racers on my own team. So, they are back together in 2010. Most of these will go to one loft races!
Pair #4 - Wow, I am excited about this pair! Gold Strike has been just a super breeder on so many different hens! Now you take him on a the 4th Place bird in the 2008 AGN race that is a daughter of the Aarden hen and in her 1st year in the breeding loft bred a very good bird in the CBS Mercedes Race. When I was handling my pigeons to see who to pair together -- they just "fit". They will breed some beautiful youngsters that I am hopeful will also fly very, very well!!!
Pair #5 - GW 690 has certainly not set the world on fire for me to date. He has bred some "decent" pigeons, but I need better from him. He is getting a new hen that I just picked up this year from one of the best flyers in Belgium - Jef Van Winkel. Very nice hen -- anxious to see if this pair clicks. If not, then GW 690 will be replaced in my breeding loft and my Van Winkel hen will be moved to a proven cock for 2011 for her shot at success!
Pair #6 - Another "back together again" pair. Mean Silver 7 and Gaby Gourmet have done it together -- done it apart -- and now they can do it again together. They are just super pigeons and when they were together for those two years they were great. Most of these will go to one loft races! Probably together for life now!
Pair #7 - McLofts 2351 and R Golden Koopman. These two have the bloodlines of the most famous pigeons in the world! I picked up 2351 for no $ and he handles very nice so I am excited about him. R Golden Koopman is one of my favorites and has bred pretty good for me so far. One of my "very interesting" matings for sure! Stay tuned -- boom or bust on this one! McLofts 2351 will probably get two years to produce...he is well bred and a very nice handling pigeon.
Pair #8 - Gold Mine and a very inbred Toye Red Opium hen. When Sam Haslem told me he had purchased two children of Red Opium when mated to Goldiva -- I told him "I have to have something off them!" and so he and I swapped hens this year. Red Opium and Goldiva were unbelievable 300-400 mile pigeons -- my favorite distances when looking to buy pigeons! Gold Mine has been my "foundation" racer...he raced for 5 years for me and was always winning here and there for me. He has won may ribbons in local shows as well...he is just a great pigeon to have around. Another "interesting pair" here... The Red Opium hen better do well here or else she is going to be labeled "at risk."
Pair #9 - Mr. Consistent and Vegas Show Girl. Mr. Consistent did it in ESPO's One Loft Race and then he did it in the breeding loft. He bred me some super racing youngsters last year when paired with Ducky. Vegas Show Girl is just that -- a "show girl" -- I had some guys from out of town come up and handle my birds and they thought she was amazing in the hand. I agree -- she is a stunning hen with an even better pedigree. Now she is mated to one of my most promising young breeders -- it will be put up or be gone time for her! I think she will do it!! Definately sending some out to one loft races out of this pair.
Pair #10 - Another "intersting" pair. 225 is a full brother to my "Miss Beautiful" and handles almost as nice -- a bit bigger than I like. 356 has been SUPERB in the breeding loft - bred me a one loft winner in her first year in the breeding loft and then I sent her to Kolvenbag & Ennis in 2009 and she did it for them in the Colorado Gold Rush. THEN her son - KE 94 - was my best racer on my young bird team! I hope 225 proves to be worth having her as a mate! If not -- he will be gone, but I sure hope he does. He gets one shot to produce with such a super hen!
Pair #11 - Over the past two years -- no hen has had as big as impact for me than 1625. Unfortunately, last year I had her mated to R Dream Moorsel just hoping he would fill an egg! He didn't -- DARN! She is now back with a very promising young cock in my loft. Come handle him and you will think he is ready to fly 400 miles right now!!! He is one of those 'loft conditioned' pigeons -- just always handle like he is in shape. They are rare--and they are diamonds! This pair is probably my "most exciting" pair for me in 2010. Here is a cock that gets a one and done opportunity to produce as he is mated to a super hen - I have a lot of confidence in this pair so let's see if it is rewarded. These youngsters will be going to the big one loft races.
Pair #12 - OK -- two pretty famous pigeon bloodlines here! I purchased both of these pigeons in 2009 and am excited to try them out. You will find Protege Loft (Kenny Rhodes) heavily marketing a full brother to my "Bruder Lucky Hope" and charging top dollar for the youngsters out of him. The hen is a "WOW" and is bred closer to Super Belgium/Holland racing pigeons than any other hen in my loft. Well, now it is time to see whether my money was well spent in acquiring these two pigeons! If they don't click this year, then I will split them up next year and give them another opportunity.
Pair #13 - Could this be the best pair in my loft? Last year they were! Bred 1st Overall AGN. Bred a competitive pigeon in ESPO's race. Bred one of my better young bird racers until she hurt her wing. They may be mates for life if they can pull it off again this year - South Africa here they come!!!
Pair #14 - My absolute favorite son of Super Kleine Lichte - 504 - being mated to a proven hen in 1627. Look over this mating and you compare it to Pair 13 above -- very closely crossing similar families! 504 is unproven as a breeder as I only was able to raise one round of late hatches out of him after I got him back from the Beaver Spring Break Race. He is a beauty! When I was handling him before entering him in the final race last year I almost pulled him at he was that nice and I knew what he was out of -- when Daniel Carter who runs the Beaver race handed him to me he said "This pigeon is one of my favorites! I really like him." Well, pretty is as pretty does and he did well! 1627 is also a super handling hen who has bred winners (her son was 8th right after 504 in Beaver last year)...these babies will also go to South Africa and other big one loft races if they don't have white flights.
Pair #14a - Saved the best for last! OK - I purchased one of the best 300-400 mile racing hens in all Holland in 2009 a few months ago and she is set to arrive at the end of January - Lady Demily (link to story about her on PIPA). I just couldn't pass up on the chance to purchase a hen that finished 4 times Top 100 National from 350-410 miles in the same year. Those are the birds you are looking for! Not sprint winners and not marathon races -- true working races from the perfect distances! Very excited to have her in my loft. Not only was she a super racer, but look at her bloodlines - inbred Reynaert's "Figo" line!! Since I am getting her late, I am going to mate her to my favorite son of Super Kleine Lichte "504" - after my normal breeding season is over, I am planning on raising some late hatches off Super Kleine Lichte x Lady Demily. Lady Demily is definately the most "proven" pigeon I have ever purchased -- hopefully it will also be money well spent!
