Jef Van Winkel - Belgium
About a year ago I purchased a hen from Jef Van Winkel and I have received several emails from people asking me "Who the heck is Jef Van Winkel?" Even though I only own one hen from Jef, I thought I would put up a page about Jef to explain a little bit more about why I decided to buy this bird (I actually tried to buy more birds, but then I decided to buy the group from the Hendriks and so I backed off getting more birds from Jef). Let me just say that Jef Van Winkel is one of the best flyers in Belgium. You ask anyone in the know and they will tell you that his results in the "One Day Long Distance" takes a backseat to no one. I am pretty much only seeking birds that fit in the "One Day Long Distance" category - I believe these are the birds that win One Loft Races and that is my #1 priority right now with #1A being to win the local club races. Anyway, that is why I decided to buy the Daughter of Strikje (link to pedigree) and will likely try to get some more Van Winkel pigeons in the future, but I need to prove out the Hendriks pigeons I have first before getting any more.
Here are some of his notable 2010 results that tells how special I believe the Van Winkel birds are - they are also a "family" of birds in that Jef has taken several foundation birds and moulded them into "his" family. The Hendriks, on the other hand, bring in lots of new blood each year and keep seeking to improve their birds, but there are very few what you might call "Hendriks" pigeons found in most Hendriks pedigrees. I think there are positives and negatives to both approaches.
